FutureA
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Commanders: B-. Nobody else had Patrick Payton anywhere near the Round 4 slot. The Commanders did, by 69 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. Banks falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In pick 30 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece. Need was not the driver here.
Pick53
Rnd2
Caleb Banks
A tidy bit of business in slot 53, where Caleb Banks graded well above the range. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick62
Rnd2
Zakee Wheatley
They paid up for Zakee Wheatley at the 62nd pick when waiting would have done the job. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick99
Rnd3
Davison Igbinosun
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Davison Igbinosun well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick121
Rnd4
Demond Claiborne
Demond Claiborne at Round 4, Pick 21 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick130
Rnd4
Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton at No. 130 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick145
Rnd5
Trey Moore
Trey Moore at pick No. 145 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick185
Rnd6
Bryce Foster
Bryce Foster at the 185th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick196
Rnd6
Barion Brown
A conviction pick on Barion Brown at Round 6, Pick 17 that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick223
Rnd7
PJ Williams
By-the-book stuff, PJ Williams at No. 223 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
