FutureB-
The Commanders won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B. The Commanders went off the board in a big way for Patrick Payton, 65 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Thieneman pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In slot 28 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick59
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
Dillon Thieneman at the 59th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick82
Rnd3
Malik Muhammad
They did well to land Malik Muhammad in Round 3, Pick 18, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick97
Rnd3
Zachariah Branch
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Zachariah Branch in pick 97. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick145
Rnd5
Patrick Payton
Value said wait; Patrick Payton in the Round 5 slot says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
Pick185
Rnd6
Charles Jagusah
Charles Jagusah at the 185th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick196
Rnd6
Thaddeus Dixon
Thaddeus Dixon in slot 196 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick223
Rnd7
Roman Hemby
They talked themselves into Roman Hemby at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
