Draft Grade — Commanders

Grand theft in pick No. 71: the Commanders steal Thieneman and grade out a B+. The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Commanders watched Dillon Thieneman slide 36 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They will need Igbinosun to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick13
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In slot 13 they get a green-dot type in the middle. Need was not the driver here.
Pick31
Rnd1
Romello Height
In the 31st pick they get a double-digit-sack hope, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
Pick71
Rnd3
Dillon Thieneman
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Dillon Thieneman in the 71st overall pick, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick95
Rnd3
Germie Bernard
Germie Bernard in pick No. 95 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick131
Rnd4
Davison Igbinosun
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Davison Igbinosun well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick145
Rnd5
DeMonte Capehart
DeMonte Capehart in pick 145 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick185
Rnd6
Jaydn Ott
Good price on Jaydn Ott in No. 185, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
Pick196
Rnd6
Charles Jagusah
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Charles Jagusah. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick223
Rnd7
Thaddeus Dixon
A tidy little value on Thaddeus Dixon in slot 223, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick232
Rnd7
Zavion Thomas
A reasonable price with a little left over, Zavion Thomas in No. 232. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
