Draft Grade — Saints
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesB+ FutureB-
Skattebo should have been long gone. The Saints pounced, and earned a B.

You build a draft on nights like this. Cam Skattebo had no business being available in No. 134, and the Saints did the only sane thing and turned in the card. The bottom line is a respectable B.

The Simon reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. It is not that Simon is a bad player; it is that the Saints had louder needs to answer first. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick9 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
In pick No. 9 they get a three-down runner. A real need, handled.
Pick49 Rnd2 Donovan Ezeiruaku
A real head-scratcher, Donovan Ezeiruaku in the Round 2 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick71 Rnd3 Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts at pick 71 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick90 Rnd3 Tez Johnson
Tez Johnson at the 90th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick93 Rnd3 Charles Grant
By-the-book stuff, Charles Grant at the 93rd overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick100 Rnd3 Chris Paul Jr.
Chris Paul Jr. at No. 100 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick108 Rnd4 Cody Simon
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cody Simon adds a linebacker and leaves cornerback, quarterback and other spots untouched.
Pick111 Rnd4 Jordan Phillips
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Phillips. It fills a real need, too.
Pick134 Rnd4 Cam Skattebo
They robbed the room for Cam Skattebo here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick155 Rnd5 Jack Nelson
Taking Jack Nelson in the 155th overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick161 Rnd5 Pat Bryant
They read the board right and Pat Bryant was the payoff at the 161st pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
