Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall D
ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureB+
The Patriots won the night they stopped Weigman from sliding. Grade: D.

This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Conner Weigman, the No. 146 name on the board, stolen at No. 256. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.

They will need Henderson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.

The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.

Pick Analysis
Pick14 Rnd1 Mason Graham
In No. 14 they get an anchor for the defensive front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick20 Rnd1 James Pearce Jr.
In pick No. 20 they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick22 Rnd1 Will Campbell
In the 22nd overall pick they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick40 Rnd2 Isaiah Bond
A quiet steal in the Round 2 slot: Isaiah Bond for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick86 Rnd3 Colston Loveland
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Colston Loveland in pick 86, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick108 Rnd4 Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton slipping to Round 4, Pick 7 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick113 Rnd4 Keon Sabb
Value with a capital V on Keon Sabb in the 113th pick, a genuine coup. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick116 Rnd4 Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton at slot 116 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick144 Rnd5 Bear Alexander
Bear Alexander at the 144th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick218 Rnd7 Quincy Riley
Taking Quincy Riley in the 218th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick220 Rnd7 Jason Henderson
Jason Henderson in No. 220 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick236 Rnd7 Collin Oliver
Collin Oliver in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick256 Rnd7 Conner Weigman
You do not let a quarterback like Conner Weigman reach Round 7, Pick 42 and blink. They did not. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
