The Bears fleeced the room on the phones and earned a A-. Boards are made to be trusted, and the Bears shredded theirs for Braelon Allen. He came off 32 spots early, and the room will hear about it. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. Coleman falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Jared Verse
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick42
Rnd2
Keon Coleman
Keon Coleman in pick No. 42 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick46
Rnd2
Calen Bullock
No edge and no loss on Calen Bullock in the 46th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick56
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
Ruke Orhorhoro at No. 56 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick75
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at the 75th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick80
Rnd3
Michael Hall Jr.
A reach on Michael Hall Jr. in Round 3, Pick 16; the board had better options right there. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick111
Rnd4
Ainias Smith
They paid sticker price for Ainias Smith in the 111th pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick123
Rnd4
Braelon Allen
A real head-scratcher, Braelon Allen in pick 123 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick143
Rnd5
Frank Gore Jr.
They talked themselves into Frank Gore Jr. at slot 143, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick148
Rnd5
Zion Tupuola-Fetui
Zion Tupuola-Fetui in pick No. 148 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
