Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
C+

FutureB-
A weekend that raised as many questions as it answered. The Commanders get a C+. The Commanders did not so much draft Garrett Dellinger as overpay for him, 53 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
That Johnson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Mike Green
In pick No. 32 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick61
Rnd2
Jayden Higgins
Good price on Jayden Higgins in the 61st pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick66
Rnd3
Kaleb Johnson
You do not let a running back like Kaleb Johnson reach pick 66 and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick70
Rnd3
Darien Porter
Darien Porter at Round 3, Pick 6 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick109
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
Kevin Winston Jr. at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick126
Rnd4
Cobee Bryant
They took Cobee Bryant at par in the 126th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick165
Rnd5
Bhayshul Tuten
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 165 with a little surplus value in Bhayshul Tuten. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick169
Rnd5
Jalen Rivers
A slide stopped in the 169th pick, with Jalen Rivers worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick179
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They paid sticker price for Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick 179, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick192
Rnd6
Jaylen Reed
Jaylen Reed in the Round 6 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick205
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
A tidy bit of business in the 205th overall pick, where Oronde Gadsden II graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick206
Rnd6
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson at slot 206 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick221
Rnd7
Simeon Barrow Jr.
The board had cheaper options than Simeon Barrow Jr. at No. 221, and it noticed. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick226
Rnd7
Kain Medrano
Nothing to complain about; Kain Medrano went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick245
Rnd7
Garrett Dellinger
Garrett Dellinger at pick No. 245 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick251
Rnd7
Corey Kiner
Corey Kiner in Round 7, Pick 35 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It fills a real need, too.
Pick257
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan at the 257th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
