Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueC- NeedB TradesA+ FutureB+
Nobody dealt better than the Patriots this weekend: B.

The Patriots did not so much draft Gabe Jacas as overpay for him, 158 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Good, not great, and the B says as much.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They banked enough surplus on Campbell to cover a lot of smaller sins.

It is not that Schwesinger is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Malaki Starks
In No. 31 they get an enforcer at safety, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick46 Rnd2 Tyler Booker
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tyler Booker at the Round 2 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick69 Rnd3 Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell in the 69th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick77 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson at pick No. 77 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick85 Rnd3 Omarr Norman-Lott
Omarr Norman-Lott is a better player than slot 85 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick97 Rnd3 Carson Schwesinger
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, running back and other spots to take Carson Schwesinger, a linebacker that was not the priority.
Pick105 Rnd4 DeMonte Capehart
They left a pile of value on the table to take DeMonte Capehart this early at the Round 4 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick117 Rnd4 Jaeden Roberts
Jaeden Roberts at pick 117 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick121 Rnd4 Gabe Jacas
Gabe Jacas in the 121st pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick138 Rnd5 Davison Igbinosun
A wild overpay on Davison Igbinosun in Round 5, Pick 1, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick143 Rnd5 Will Lee III
Will Lee III at pick No. 143 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick163 Rnd5 Nohl Williams
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Nohl Williams. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick217 Rnd7 Jalen Rivers
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jalen Rivers in No. 217, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick220 Rnd7 Jonah Monheim
A clean, defensible pick in the 220th overall pick with a little surplus value in Jonah Monheim. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick241 Rnd7 Traeshon Holden
They reached into another round for Traeshon Holden, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
