Good, not great, for the 49ers: B-. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Aaron Lewis at the 249th pick is 48 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The Amegadjie value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
In the 31st overall pick they get protection for the quarterback, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
They paid sticker price for Ruke Orhorhoro in Round 2, Pick 31, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick94
Rnd3
Kiran Amegadjie
The board fumbled Kiran Amegadjie all the way to slot 94, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick98
Rnd3
D.J. James
You do not let a cornerback like D.J. James reach pick 98 and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick132
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
No edge and no loss on Cedric Gray in pick No. 132; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick176
Rnd6
Luke McCaffrey
Somehow Luke McCaffrey was still sitting there in No. 176, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick209
Rnd6
Trevor Keegan
They reached a country mile for Trevor Keegan at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick214
Rnd6
Brian Ugwu
Brian Ugwu in slot 214 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick215
Rnd6
Xavier Thomas
This one needs a full-page explanation: Xavier Thomas in Round 6, Pick 40, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick249
Rnd7
Aaron Lewis
Aaron Lewis at No. 249 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
