Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall D-
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureC
The phones sank the Steelers this weekend: D-.

The C.J. Hanson pick is the one that will follow the Steelers into the fall. They took him 37 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.

The Jones pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.

Pick Analysis
Pick14 Rnd1 Brock Bowers
In the 14th pick they get a seam-stretching tight end, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Pick51 Rnd2 Payton Wilson
Value with a capital V on Payton Wilson in No. 51, a genuine coup. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick84 Rnd3 Calen Bullock
Calen Bullock at pick 84 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick120 Rnd4 Beaux Limmer
A straight-up fair deal on Beaux Limmer at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick121 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at Round 4, Pick 21 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick167 Rnd5 Jarrian Jones
You do not let a cornerback like Jarrian Jones reach pick No. 167 and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick197 Rnd6 Joe Milton III
No edge and no loss on Joe Milton III in Round 6, Pick 22; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick201 Rnd6 Elijah Jones
The board had Elijah Jones higher than the 201st pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. It fills a real need, too.
Pick238 Rnd7 C.J. Hanson
They left a pile of value on the table to take C.J. Hanson this early at pick No. 238. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
