Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
C
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
The Saints got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the C. Nobody had Oronde Gadsden II this high, and it is not close. The Saints reached 59 spots to get him at the Round 4 slot. A mixed bag that lands at C.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The Warren steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In No. 9 they get a three-down runner at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick40
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Somehow Tyler Warren was still sitting there in pick 40, and they pounced on premier tight end value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick71
Rnd3
Darien Porter
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Darien Porter. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick93
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
Nothing to complain about; Cam Skattebo went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick94
Rnd3
Charles Grant
A tidy little value on Charles Grant in the 94th pick, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick112
Rnd4
Oluwafemi Oladejo
This one needs a full-page explanation: Oluwafemi Oladejo in the 112th overall pick, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick115
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore at Round 4, Pick 13 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick116
Rnd4
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Antwaun Powell-Ryland well ahead of where he belonged. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick131
Rnd4
Ty Robinson
They talked themselves into Ty Robinson at the 131st pick, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick135
Rnd4
Hollin Pierce
By-the-book stuff, Hollin Pierce at pick 135 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick138
Rnd4
Oronde Gadsden II
Value said wait; Oronde Gadsden II in the 138th overall pick says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick150
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick No. 150 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick177
Rnd6
Jalen McLeod
A wild overpay on Jalen McLeod in slot 177, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick225
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
A premium they did not need to pay, Isaac TeSlaa a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick248
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan at pick No. 248 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A minor need, but a need all the same.
