Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D-
ValueC NeedB TradesF FutureB+
The 49ers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-.

When the story of this class is written, it opens with Phillip Webb at pick No. 206, a reach of 132 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Tuten value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Jahdae Barron
In the 20th overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside. Need was not the driver here.
Pick43 Rnd2 Jihaad Campbell
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jihaad Campbell in the 43rd pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick75 Rnd3 Jared Wilson
They reached into another round for Jared Wilson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick100 Rnd3 Charles Grant
Charles Grant at Round 3, Pick 36 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick113 Rnd4 David Walker
Fair-plus on David Walker, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick122 Rnd4 Logan Brown
Logan Brown at pick 122 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick138 Rnd4 JJ Pegues
They talked themselves into JJ Pegues at the 138th overall pick, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick147 Rnd5 CJ West
They left a pile of value on the table to take CJ West this early at Round 5, Pick 9. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick160 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 160th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick173 Rnd5 Bhayshul Tuten
A running back of that caliber at No. 173 is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick191 Rnd6 Simeon Barrow Jr.
A big swing on Simeon Barrow Jr. at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick206 Rnd6 Phillip Webb
A wild overpay on Phillip Webb in pick No. 206, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick227 Rnd7 Caleb Rogers
Value said wait; Caleb Rogers in pick 227 says they were not listening. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick249 Rnd7 Isaac TeSlaa
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Isaac TeSlaa in slot 249. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick252 Rnd7 Jay Toia
Jay Toia at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
