Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall F
ValueC- NeedB TradesF FutureB
The 49ers went off-script early, and it cost them a F.

The tape said wait; the 49ers did not. Phillip Webb went at the 147th pick, a good 191 picks before the board was ready.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Gadsden II. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with quarterback still staring back at them.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Nic Scourton
In pick No. 20 they get a premier pass rusher, reach and all. A real need, handled.
Pick43 Rnd2 Jihaad Campbell
Nothing to complain about; Jihaad Campbell went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick56 Rnd2 Darien Porter
Darien Porter at slot 56 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick68 Rnd3 Jared Wilson
A wild overpay on Jared Wilson in No. 68, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick75 Rnd3 Charles Grant
The board had cheaper options than Charles Grant at the Round 3 slot, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick100 Rnd3 Logan Brown
Logan Brown in Round 3, Pick 36 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick113 Rnd4 Jordan Phillips
A clean, defensible pick in slot 113 with a little surplus value in Jordan Phillips. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick122 Rnd4 Joshua Farmer
They read the board right and Joshua Farmer was the payoff at the Round 4 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick138 Rnd4 JJ Pegues
A big swing on JJ Pegues at the 138th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick143 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They reached into another round for Dont'e Thornton Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick147 Rnd5 Phillip Webb
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Phillip Webb. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick160 Rnd5 CJ West
CJ West at No. 160 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick200 Rnd6 Marcus Yarns
Marcus Yarns at pick 200 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick206 Rnd6 Caleb Rogers
They left a pile of value on the table to take Caleb Rogers this early at Round 6, Pick 30. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick216 Rnd6 Oronde Gadsden II
Oronde Gadsden II in pick 216 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick227 Rnd7 R.J. Mickens
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing R.J. Mickens in No. 227. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick249 Rnd7 Jay Toia
Jay Toia at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick252 Rnd7 Tyler Loop
Value said wait; Tyler Loop in the 252nd pick says they were not listening. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
