Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
D-
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB-
The 49ers bled value on every deal, hence the D-. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The 49ers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
The McMillan pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Troy Fautanu
In pick No. 15 they get an anchor for the offensive line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
A premium they did not need to pay, Xavier Legette a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick58
Rnd2
Christian Haynes
A clean, defensible pick in No. 58 with a little surplus value in Christian Haynes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick68
Rnd3
Jonah Elliss
Jonah Elliss in Round 3, Pick 4 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick80
Rnd3
Jalen McMillan
Value said wait; Jalen McMillan in pick 80 says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick106
Rnd4
Will Shipley
The board had cheaper options than Will Shipley at the Round 4 slot, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick122
Rnd4
Malik Mustapha
They paid a round early for Malik Mustapha in the 122nd overall pick, more than the board wanted. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick146
Rnd5
Elijah Jones
Elijah Jones at slot 146 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick164
Rnd5
Tip Reiman
Tip Reiman in pick 164 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
