Jareo DRAFTING FOR THESteelers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Good, not great, for the Steelers: B-. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Steelers took Sam Hartman a full 43 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
They went 4 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. They reloaded the coverage unit in bulk.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Nate Wiggins
A clean, defensible pick in No. 20 with a little surplus value in Nate Wiggins. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick51
Rnd2
Payton Wilson
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Payton Wilson in pick 51. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick84
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
No drama and no debate, Khyree Jackson went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick118
Rnd4
Malik Washington
The board fumbled Malik Washington all the way to the 118th pick, and they scooped it up. The roster fit checks out.
Pick119
Rnd4
Roger Rosengarten
They reached into another round for Roger Rosengarten, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick194
Rnd6
Drake Nugent
They paid a round early for Drake Nugent in the 194th overall pick, more than the board wanted. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick240
Rnd7
Sam Hartman
A big swing on Sam Hartman at pick 240, well ahead of any board in the building. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
