Draft Grade — Colts

FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Colts to a C+. The rest of the league had time to spare on Kain Medrano; the Colts did not wait, grabbing him 82 spots ahead at pick No. 255. A weekend of give and take that grades a C+.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Watts. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick Analysis
Pick52
Rnd2
Azareye'h Thomas
They paid sticker price for Azareye'h Thomas in No. 52, and that is fine. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick53
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
Nice patience on Xavier Watts, who had no business lasting to the 53rd overall pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick56
Rnd2
Alfred Collins
No edge and no loss on Alfred Collins in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick60
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
A straight-up fair deal on Donovan Jackson at Round 2, Pick 28, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick63
Rnd2
Demetrius Knight Jr.
A tidy little value on Demetrius Knight Jr. in slot 63, a step better than break-even. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick64
Rnd2
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson at pick 64 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick72
Rnd3
Shemar Turner
They paid up for Shemar Turner at Round 3, Pick 8 when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick79
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor at the 79th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick82
Rnd3
Darien Porter
Nothing to complain about; Darien Porter went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick84
Rnd3
Darius Alexander
They paid a round early for Darius Alexander in No. 84, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
Pick98
Rnd3
Oluwafemi Oladejo
Oluwafemi Oladejo in slot 98 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick99
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson in the 99th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick100
Rnd3
Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. at the Round 3 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick102
Rnd3
Kevin Winston Jr.
Kevin Winston Jr. in pick No. 102 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick121
Rnd4
Jeffrey Bassa
No drama and no debate, Jeffrey Bassa went about where he belonged in pick 121. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick143
Rnd5
Logan Brown
Logan Brown at pick No. 143 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick151
Rnd5
Tyler Shough
The board had Tyler Shough higher than slot 151, and the quarterback fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick162
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues in No. 162 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick171
Rnd5
DJ Giddens
They took DJ Giddens at par in the 171st overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick172
Rnd5
Jack Nelson
A conviction pick on Jack Nelson at the Round 5 slot that the board grades a round light. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick191
Rnd6
Clay Webb
By-the-book stuff, Clay Webb at the 191st pick squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick192
Rnd6
Thomas Fidone II
Thomas Fidone II at Round 6, Pick 16 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick207
Rnd6
R.J. Mickens
R.J. Mickens in pick 207 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick212
Rnd6
Isaac TeSlaa
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Isaac TeSlaa. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick217
Rnd7
Cam Jackson
A premium they did not need to pay, Cam Jackson a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick222
Rnd7
Bilhal Kone
Bilhal Kone at the 222nd pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick228
Rnd7
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
A real head-scratcher, Jamon Dumas-Johnson in Round 7, Pick 12 is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick240
Rnd7
Jalen Travis
A big swing on Jalen Travis at the 240th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick248
Rnd7
Marcus Yarns
A reach for Marcus Yarns in No. 248; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick254
Rnd7
Cody Lindenberg
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cody Lindenberg. It fills a real need, too.
Pick255
Rnd7
Kain Medrano
They reached a country mile for Kain Medrano at the Round 7 slot, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
