The Colts got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the C-. The Xavier Truss pick is the one that will follow the Colts into the fall. They took him 81 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Emmanwori. It is not that Mukuba is a bad player; it is that the Colts had louder needs to answer first.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick Analysis
Pick45
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori at No. 45 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick55
Rnd2
Azareye'h Thomas
Azareye'h Thomas at slot 55 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick56
Rnd2
Demetrius Knight Jr.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Demetrius Knight Jr.. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick65
Rnd3
Deone Walker
Deone Walker at pick No. 65 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick69
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing TreVeyon Henderson in pick 69. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick75
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
A curious use of the 75th overall pick. Wide receiver, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a safety in Andrew Mukuba did not.
Pick76
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
A reach on Donovan Jackson in pick 76; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick83
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor in pick No. 83 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick99
Rnd3
Smael Mondon Jr.
A conviction pick on Smael Mondon Jr. at the 99th overall pick that the board grades a round light. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick101
Rnd3
Kevin Winston Jr.
A surprising call. With wide receiver, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent Round 3, Pick 37 on Kevin Winston Jr., a safety they were not short of.
Pick108
Rnd4
Ajani Cornelius
No edge and no loss on Ajani Cornelius in No. 108; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick109
Rnd4
O'Donnell Fortune
They zigged when the board said zag, taking O'Donnell Fortune at cornerback with wide receiver, quarterback and other spots open.
Pick111
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. at the 111th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick112
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
Good price on Jared Wilson in slot 112, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
Pick114
Rnd4
Brashard Smith
They paid sticker price for Brashard Smith in slot 114, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick116
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
They liked Darius Alexander enough to skip the value, taking him in the 116th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick122
Rnd4
Jack Nelson
They jumped the gun on Jack Nelson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick150
Rnd5
Jeffrey Bassa
Somehow Jeffrey Bassa was still sitting there in No. 150, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick162
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
A real head-scratcher, JJ Pegues in pick No. 162 is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick171
Rnd5
Cobee Bryant
Cobee Bryant at Round 5, Pick 32 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick191
Rnd6
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
A wild overpay on Jamon Dumas-Johnson in the Round 6 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick224
Rnd7
Xavier Truss
Value said wait; Xavier Truss in the 224th pick says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
