FutureB-
The Patriots bet the future on McCarthy. The board says B+. Start where it matters. The Patriots took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.
They will need Tupuola-Fetui to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The Patriots indulged a want in Hart while a need in interior defensive lineman stayed open.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Brock Bowers
In No. 11 they get a security blanket over the middle at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick23
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
Pick41
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
The board had Tyler Guyton higher than the Round 2 slot, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick71
Rnd3
Ja'Lynn Polk
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ja'Lynn Polk. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick90
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
By-the-book stuff, Khyree Jackson at pick 90 squarely in line with his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick103
Rnd4
Cam Hart
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman to take Cam Hart, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick137
Rnd5
Kitan Oladapo
They went early on Kitan Oladapo in the 137th pick, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick180
Rnd6
Zion Tupuola-Fetui
A big swing on Zion Tupuola-Fetui at the 180th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick193
Rnd6
Daijun Edwards
Daijun Edwards at No. 193 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick231
Rnd7
KT Leveston
KT Leveston in the 231st overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
