Draft Grade — Patriots

The Patriots drew a line under the quarterback search with Maye: B.

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. No fireworks, but a solid B.

James falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The phones were where this weekend was really won. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick3 Rnd1 Drake Maye
In No. 3 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick29 Rnd1 Brian Thomas Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 29 they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick41 Rnd2 Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton at the Round 2 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick91 Rnd3 DJ James
A cornerback of that caliber at the 91st overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick100 Rnd3 Cole Bishop
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cole Bishop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick106 Rnd4 Trey Benson
Trey Benson at slot 106 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick180 Rnd6 Luke McCaffrey
Somehow Luke McCaffrey was still sitting there in the 180th pick, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick193 Rnd6 Walter Rouse
Walter Rouse in pick No. 193 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick231 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
They robbed the room for Tanner McLachlan here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
