You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Broncos did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.

Whatever Drake Maye becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. Every board in the league had McCaffrey lower, and that gap is the story.

They will answer for taking cornerback early while edge rusher and tight end went begging. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left edge rusher open, and the grade is the bill.
