Draft Grade — Bears
Overall A-
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureA+
The Bears let Hicks fall into their laps, and walked away with a A-.

If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Bears, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Hicks. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Spending an early pick on DT-EDGE with interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.

They will need Van Pran to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

Bottom line, with Laiatu Latu leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.

Pick Analysis
Pick9 Rnd1 Laiatu Latu
In the 9th overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick16 Rnd1 Brian Thomas Jr.
In the 16th pick they get a true top target at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick75 Rnd3 Sedrick Van Pran
A conviction pick on Sedrick Van Pran at slot 75 that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick78 Rnd3 Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier at pick No. 78 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick81 Rnd3 Maason Smith
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in Round 3, Pick 17 leaves interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots for later.
Pick110 Rnd4 Cooper Beebe
No drama and no debate, Cooper Beebe went about where he belonged in pick 110. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick127 Rnd4 Jahdae Barron
The board had Jahdae Barron higher than slot 127, and the safety fell to them anyway. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick146 Rnd5 Jaden Hicks
Jaden Hicks in the Round 5 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick186 Rnd6 Sam Hartman
They did well to land Sam Hartman in the 186th pick, just ahead of his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick232 Rnd7 Blake Watson
A straight-up fair deal on Blake Watson at pick No. 232, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
