Draft Grade — Browns

TradesA+
FutureA+
The Browns worked the phones like thieves and earned a A-. Nobody else had RJ Oben anywhere near slot 174. The Browns did, by 53 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A-.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Starks at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Emeka Egbuka
Emeka Egbuka in the Round 2 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick46
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
A safety of that caliber at No. 46 is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick67
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
A reasonable price with a little left over, Donovan Jackson in slot 67. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick84
Rnd3
Barrett Carter
Good price on Barrett Carter in Round 3, Pick 20, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick94
Rnd3
Will Howard
No edge and no loss on Will Howard in the 94th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick104
Rnd4
Tez Johnson
Nothing to complain about; Tez Johnson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick121
Rnd4
Jake Majors
The board had cheaper options than Jake Majors at the Round 4 slot, and it noticed. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick149
Rnd5
Malachi Moore
A tidy bit of business in the 149th pick, where Malachi Moore graded well above the range. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick171
Rnd5
Jason Marshall Jr.
Jason Marshall Jr. at pick No. 171 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick174
Rnd5
RJ Oben
A wild overpay on RJ Oben in slot 174, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick179
Rnd6
Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II at Round 6, Pick 3 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick192
Rnd6
Joshua Gray
They liked Joshua Gray enough to skip the value, taking him in the 192nd overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick200
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
Oronde Gadsden II at pick 200 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick204
Rnd6
Ja'Quinden Jackson
Ja'Quinden Jackson in No. 204 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick211
Rnd6
Ja'Corey Brooks
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ja'Corey Brooks this early at slot 211. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick216
Rnd6
Shemar James
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Shemar James. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick218
Rnd7
Jabbar Muhammad
Jabbar Muhammad at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick247
Rnd7
Moliki Matavao
They talked themselves into Moliki Matavao at No. 247, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick255
Rnd7
Shilo Sanders
Value said wait; Shilo Sanders in pick No. 255 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
