mudwhistle DRAFTING FOR THEChargers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Chargers and Mullings: B-. The Chargers spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Kalel Mullings, the No. 110 name on the board, in Round 6, Pick 33. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
The Travis pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. They left with interior defensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In pick 22 they get a run-stuffing presence up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick55
Rnd2
Colston Loveland
Colston Loveland is a better player than Round 2, Pick 23 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick86
Rnd3
Evan Stewart
They paid up for Evan Stewart at slot 86 when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick124
Rnd4
Jake Majors
Jake Majors in the 124th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
Pick157
Rnd5
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at the 157th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick179
Rnd6
Smael Mondon Jr.
They will replay Smael Mondon Jr. at the Round 6 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick198
Rnd6
Terrance Ferguson
Terrance Ferguson at pick No. 198 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick208
Rnd6
Kalel Mullings
Kalel Mullings at No. 208 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick213
Rnd6
Jalen Travis
A big swing on Jalen Travis at pick No. 213, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick217
Rnd7
Xavier Nwankpa
A safety of that caliber at the Round 7 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick252
Rnd7
Donovan Edwards
Taking Donovan Edwards in the 252nd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
