Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall C
ValueB NeedB- TradesD- FutureB-
The Steelers robbed the room for Puni. Final grade: C.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Steelers were there to profit. Dominick Puni, the No. 89 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 4 slot. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C.

The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while quarterback, linebacker and other spots went begging.

It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Jackson Powers-Johnson
No drama and no debate, Jackson Powers-Johnson went about where he belonged in No. 25. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick51 Rnd2 Mike Sainristil
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mike Sainristil. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick84 Rnd3 Devontez Walker
No edge and no loss on Devontez Walker in pick No. 84; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick98 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 98 on Patrick Paul with quarterback, linebacker and other spots unsolved.
Pick117 Rnd4 Calen Bullock
Calen Bullock at pick 117 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick119 Rnd4 Dominick Puni
Of all the spots to shop, they chose offensive lineman. Dominick Puni in the Round 4 slot leaves quarterback, linebacker and other spots for later.
Pick126 Rnd4 Tyler Davis
A reach for Tyler Davis in the 126th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick129 Rnd4 Brenden Rice
They read the board right and Brenden Rice was the payoff at Round 4, Pick 29. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick169 Rnd5 Jaylin Simpson
Nice patience on Jaylin Simpson, who had no business lasting to Round 5, Pick 33. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick178 Rnd6 Khristian Boyd
They jumped the gun on Khristian Boyd, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
