Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesA+
FutureB-
The Panthers turned the phones into found money: B+. The Panthers went off the board in a big way for Luke Lachey, 49 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
The Campbell value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The Ted Karras deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In No. 17 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick44
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell at pick 44 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick49
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
Donovan Ezeiruaku in pick No. 49 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick57
Rnd2
Jayden Higgins
No edge and no loss on Jayden Higgins in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick74
Rnd3
Deone Walker
They paid up for Deone Walker at the 74th pick when waiting would have done the job. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick111
Rnd4
Lathan Ransom
Lathan Ransom slid further than he should have, and Round 4, Pick 9 is lovely value for the safety. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick114
Rnd4
Anthony Belton
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Anthony Belton. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick119
Rnd4
Dorian Strong
Dorian Strong at No. 119 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick140
Rnd5
Oluwafemi Oladejo
Oluwafemi Oladejo in pick No. 140 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick146
Rnd5
Malachi Moore
A reasonable price with a little left over, Malachi Moore in pick 146. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick163
Rnd5
Luke Lachey
A wild overpay on Luke Lachey in the Round 5 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick204
Rnd6
Jay Toia
They took Jay Toia at par in the 204th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick217
Rnd7
Kyle Monangai
They paid sticker price for Kyle Monangai in slot 217, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick230
Rnd7
Desmond Watson
A straight-up fair deal on Desmond Watson at the 230th pick, value and slot in agreement. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
