ModestWalrus DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B
ValueB+
NeedA-
TradesB-
FutureB-
Slaughter should have been long gone. The 49ers pounced, and earned a B. When a board-topper like Jake Slaughter slides to pick No. 57, you do not overthink it, and the 49ers did not.
The Capehart pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Makai Lemon
In pick No. 26 they get a matchup problem out wide, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick57
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 57th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick91
Rnd3
Cayden Green
Cayden Green at No. 91 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick126
Rnd4
Jaishawn Barham
Good price on Jaishawn Barham in Round 4, Pick 26, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick134
Rnd4
DeMonte Capehart
DeMonte Capehart at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick139
Rnd4
Demond Claiborne
Demond Claiborne at slot 139 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick140
Rnd4
DJ McKinney
Value with a capital V on DJ McKinney in the 140th pick, a genuine coup. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
