b DRAFTING FOR THEPackers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Packers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Packers: B-. There is reaching, and then there is Tanor Bortolini at slot 168. The Packers jumped the board by 49 and dared it to prove them wrong. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
Getting Vaki where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Nate Wiggins
In the 25th pick they get a potential shutdown corner, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick41
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in the 41st overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick58
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
Ruke Orhorhoro at slot 58 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick88
Rnd3
Trey Benson
Trey Benson at pick 88 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick91
Rnd3
Gabriel Murphy
Fair-plus on Gabriel Murphy, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick127
Rnd4
Mason McCormick
Mason McCormick at the Round 4 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick168
Rnd5
Tanor Bortolini
A real head-scratcher, Tanor Bortolini in the 168th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick204
Rnd6
Sione Vaki
Sione Vaki in No. 204 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick216
Rnd6
Jaylan Ford
Jaylan Ford in Round 6, Pick 41 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick243
Rnd7
LaDarius Henderson
They paid sticker price for LaDarius Henderson in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick251
Rnd7
Ro Torrence
A reach on Ro Torrence in pick 251; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
