Grand theft in the 95th overall pick: the Lions steal Wheatley and grade out a A. Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Lions came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close. Just about everything broke right, and the A follows.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Wheatley. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Lions clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Connor Lew and all.
Pick Analysis
Pick63
Rnd2
Connor Lew
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 63, where Connor Lew graded well above the range. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick95
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
Taking Zakee Wheatley in the Round 3 slot is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick109
Rnd4
Jack Endries
They let Jack Endries come to them and pounced at No. 109. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick113
Rnd4
Domani Jackson
Fair-plus on Domani Jackson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick117
Rnd4
Chris Johnson
A clean, defensible pick in slot 117 with a little surplus value in Chris Johnson. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick135
Rnd4
Jyaire Hill
A straight-up fair deal on Jyaire Hill at Round 4, Pick 35, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick156
Rnd5
Max Iheanachor
Nothing to complain about; Max Iheanachor went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick187
Rnd6
Monroe Mills
Circle this one: Monroe Mills at pick 187 is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick209
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Trey Zuhn III. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick221
Rnd7
Amare Campbell
Amare Campbell at the 221st overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick256
Rnd7
TJ Metcalf
TJ Metcalf in slot 256 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
