FutureB-
Sanders is the plan now, and the 49ers grade out a D-. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The 49ers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.
So much rides on Shedeur Sanders that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They are betting Bryant proves the room right and everyone else wrong. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Shedeur Sanders
In pick 3 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value.
Pick30
Rnd1
Mykel Williams
They read the board right and Mykel Williams was the payoff at the Round 1 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick56
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Aireontae Ersery at the 56th pick is the proof. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick62
Rnd2
TreVeyon Henderson
Nothing to complain about; TreVeyon Henderson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick75
Rnd3
Demetrius Knight Jr.
Demetrius Knight Jr. is a better player than No. 75 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jordan Phillips
They paid up for Jordan Phillips at Round 3, Pick 36 when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick113
Rnd4
Joshua Farmer
Joshua Farmer at slot 113 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick122
Rnd4
Pat Bryant
Pat Bryant at pick No. 122 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick138
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Malachi Moore. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick147
Rnd5
Hollin Pierce
A quiet steal in No. 147: Hollin Pierce for less than the market said. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick160
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
A reach on Seth McLaughlin in pick 160; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick227
Rnd7
R.J. Mickens
R.J. Mickens slipping to slot 227 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick249
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
Value with a capital V on Isaac TeSlaa in pick No. 249, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick252
Rnd7
Jaylin Smith
No edge and no loss on Jaylin Smith in the 252nd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It adds depth where they could use a little.
