Frisco DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
C+
ValueC-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Flashes of a plan, unevenly executed. 49ers: C+. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Xavier Truss at pick No. 249 is 42 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C+.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Etienne value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Hit on Jalon Walker and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Jalon Walker
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Isaiah Bond
A big swing on Isaiah Bond at No. 43, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick75
Rnd3
Zy Alexander
Zy Alexander at the Round 3 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick100
Rnd3
Lathan Ransom
A straight-up fair deal on Lathan Ransom at pick 100, value and slot in agreement. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick113
Rnd4
Sai'vion Jones
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Sai'vion Jones. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick138
Rnd4
Kaimon Rucker
They jumped the gun on Kaimon Rucker, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
Pick147
Rnd5
Barryn Sorrell
A wild overpay on Barryn Sorrell in the 147th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick160
Rnd5
Trevor Etienne
Value with a capital V on Trevor Etienne in No. 160, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick227
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
They reached into another round for Hayden Conner, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick249
Rnd7
Xavier Truss
They left a pile of value on the table to take Xavier Truss this early at Round 7, Pick 33. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick252
Rnd7
John Williams
John Williams at pick 252 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
