The Jets cashed the board's mistake on Joly: B. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Justin Joly got past him. The Jets do not have to explain a thing at the 192nd overall pick. The bottom line is a respectable B.
They will need Williams Sr. to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick7
Rnd1
Peter Woods
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get a premier pass rusher at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick32
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In pick No. 32 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece, outstanding value to boot. More want than need.
Pick36
Rnd2
Denzel Boston
Denzel Boston slipping to the 36th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick40
Rnd2
Arch Manning
They paid sticker price for Arch Manning in the 40th overall pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick44
Rnd2
Mansoor Delane
A cornerback of that caliber at slot 44 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick105
Rnd4
Dillon Thieneman
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Dillon Thieneman in the Round 4 slot, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick147
Rnd5
Aaron Graves
This one needs a full-page explanation: Aaron Graves in pick 147, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
Pick178
Rnd5
Max Iheanachor
A slide stopped in No. 178, with Max Iheanachor worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick192
Rnd6
Justin Joly
Steal is underselling it; Justin Joly at the 192nd pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick202
Rnd6
Zane Durant
Somehow Zane Durant was still sitting there in No. 202, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick208
Rnd6
Aaron Anderson
Aaron Anderson at the 208th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick237
Rnd7
Desmond Reid
No drama and no debate, Desmond Reid went about where he belonged in pick No. 237. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick253
Rnd7
James Williams Sr.
They talked themselves into James Williams Sr. at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick254
Rnd7
Jerry Wilson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jerry Wilson at slot 254. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
