Draft Grade — 49ers

The 49ers cashed the board's mistake on Mafah: B.

You build a draft on nights like this. Phil Mafah had no business being available in the Round 7 slot, and the 49ers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

Jones has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.

The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Will Campbell
In slot 11 they get an anchor for the offensive line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick43 Rnd2 Tyler Warren
A tight end of that caliber at No. 43 is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick75 Rnd3 Carson Schwesinger
Carson Schwesinger in pick No. 75 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick99 Rnd3 Sai'vion Jones
They reached a country mile for Sai'vion Jones at the Round 3 slot, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick112 Rnd4 Denzel Burke
The board fumbled Denzel Burke all the way to the 112th overall pick, and they scooped it up. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick139 Rnd4 Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at pick 139 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick148 Rnd5 JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at Round 5, Pick 9 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick170 Rnd5 Nazir Stackhouse
Value said wait; Nazir Stackhouse in the 170th pick says they were not listening. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick189 Rnd6 Jack Kiser
They jumped the gun on Jack Kiser, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
Pick190 Rnd6 Ricky White III
A reach for Ricky White III in pick 190; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick228 Rnd7 Craig Woodson
Circle this one: Craig Woodson at Round 7, Pick 10 is a fall that decides a draft. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick232 Rnd7 Clay Webb
They liked Clay Webb enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 232. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick249 Rnd7 Phil Mafah
Phil Mafah at slot 249 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick255 Rnd7 Hunter Wohler
Hunter Wohler slid further than he should have, and pick No. 255 is lovely value for the safety. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
