Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
D
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB+
Beck is the Cowboys' new face under center. Grade: D. They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Chip Trayanum, 87 picks early at Round 6, Pick 31.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Whatever Carson Beck becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Leonard value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick7
Rnd1
Carson Beck
By-the-book stuff, Carson Beck at Round 1, Pick 7 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick26
Rnd1
Emery Jones Jr.
In pick No. 26 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick39
Rnd2
Mykel Williams
They took Mykel Williams at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick58
Rnd2
Danny Stutsman
No drama and no debate, Danny Stutsman went about where he belonged in the 58th pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick63
Rnd2
Ajani Cornelius
A reasonable price with a little left over, Ajani Cornelius in No. 63. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick71
Rnd3
Nic Anderson
The board had cheaper options than Nic Anderson at slot 71, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick90
Rnd3
Raheim Sanders
Raheim Sanders at Round 3, Pick 26 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick91
Rnd3
J. Michael Sturdivant
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on J. Michael Sturdivant. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick122
Rnd4
Riley Leonard
Riley Leonard at the 122nd pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick127
Rnd4
Nick Emmanwori
Nothing to complain about; Nick Emmanwori went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick154
Rnd5
Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins in No. 154 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick186
Rnd6
Reuben Fatheree II
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 186 is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick191
Rnd6
Chip Trayanum
A real head-scratcher, Chip Trayanum in the 191st overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
