Draft Grade — Cowboys

FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Cowboys to a D. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
With cornerback and tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on edge rusher is the choice that costs them. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.
Every board in the league had Hunter lower, and that gap is the story.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick13
Rnd1
Nic Scourton
In the 13th pick they get a double-digit-sack hope. Need was not the driver here.
Pick26
Rnd1
Emery Jones Jr.
In pick No. 26 they get protection for the quarterback, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
Isaiah Bond
A straight-up fair deal on Isaiah Bond at Round 2, Pick 7, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick58
Rnd2
Danny Stutsman
Danny Stutsman in pick 58 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick71
Rnd3
Nic Anderson
A reach on Nic Anderson in the 71st overall pick; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick90
Rnd3
Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton at slot 90 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick91
Rnd3
Derrick Moore
Of all the spots to shop, they chose edge rusher. Derrick Moore in the Round 3 slot leaves cornerback and tight end for later.
Pick97
Rnd4
Raheim Sanders
A reach for Raheim Sanders in No. 97; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick122
Rnd4
Aireontae Ersery
A quiet steal in No. 122: Aireontae Ersery for less than the market said. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick129
Rnd5
Donovan Smith
Donovan Smith slid further than he should have, and pick No. 129 is lovely value for the quarterback. The roster fit checks out.
Pick154
Rnd5
Alfred Collins
They talked themselves into Alfred Collins at slot 154, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick186
Rnd6
Jarquez Hunter
Jarquez Hunter at the 186th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
