Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
D
ValueB-

FutureB+
Larceny in pick 94 lands the Cowboys a D, Simmons and all. The phones were a trap the Cowboys kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Sanders reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They banked enough surplus on Simmons to cover a lot of smaller sins.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In the 17th overall pick they get the heartbeat of the defense at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick30
Rnd1
Emery Jones Jr.
In No. 30 they get protection for the quarterback. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43
Rnd2
Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II at the 43rd pick is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick58
Rnd2
Mykel Williams
Nice patience on Mykel Williams, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick64
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
They jumped the gun on Donovan Jackson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick75
Rnd3
Nic Anderson
They paid sticker price for Nic Anderson in pick No. 75, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick81
Rnd3
Riley Leonard
Riley Leonard in Round 3, Pick 17 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick90
Rnd3
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
A reach for Jamon Dumas-Johnson in pick 90; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick92
Rnd3
Raheim Sanders
A conviction pick on Raheim Sanders at the Round 3 slot that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick94
Rnd3
Josh Simmons
Circle this one: Josh Simmons at pick No. 94 is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick122
Rnd4
Nick Emmanwori
They took Nick Emmanwori at par in No. 122, which is nothing to complain about. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick154
Rnd5
Will Sheppard
A reach on Will Sheppard in the 154th pick; the board had better options right there. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick186
Rnd6
Will Howard
Will Howard at the 186th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It fills a real need, too.
