The Cowboys bled value on every deal, hence the C. The Cowboys torched the value chart for Chip Trayanum, taking him 101 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C in the wash.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Emery Jones
In the 31st overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick58
Rnd2
Tate Ratledge
No drama and no debate, Tate Ratledge went about where he belonged in pick No. 58. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick90
Rnd3
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
They paid sticker price for Jamon Dumas-Johnson in pick 90, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick91
Rnd3
Raheim Sanders
Raheim Sanders in the 91st pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick94
Rnd3
Shemar Turner
They took Shemar Turner at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick95
Rnd3
J. Michael Sturdivant
They paid a round early for J. Michael Sturdivant in Round 3, Pick 31, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick122
Rnd4
Alfred Collins
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Alfred Collins. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick154
Rnd5
Chip Trayanum
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Chip Trayanum well ahead of where he belonged. It fills a real need, too.
Pick186
Rnd6
Jalen Catalon
Jalen Catalon in No. 186 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
