Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
D
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesF
FutureA+
The Cowboys got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D. The Cowboys clearly saw something nobody else did in Jahdae Barron, taking him 31 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The Howard pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Emery Jones
In the 24th pick they get a long-term starter on the line, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick26
Rnd1
JT Tuimoloau
In No. 26 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick51
Rnd2
Drew Allar
Drew Allar in slot 51 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick58
Rnd2
Danny Stutsman
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Danny Stutsman. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick60
Rnd2
Earnest Greene III
They took Earnest Greene III at par in pick 60, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick83
Rnd3
Elic Ayomanor
The board had Elic Ayomanor higher than pick No. 83, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick88
Rnd3
Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton at the 88th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
Pick90
Rnd3
Smael Mondon Jr.
A conviction pick on Smael Mondon Jr. at pick No. 90 that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick91
Rnd3
Raheim Sanders
They paid up for Raheim Sanders at the Round 3 slot when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick93
Rnd3
J. Michael Sturdivant
J. Michael Sturdivant at pick 93 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick122
Rnd4
Jahdae Barron
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jahdae Barron. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick154
Rnd5
Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins at the 154th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick186
Rnd6
Will Howard
Will Howard in slot 186 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
