The Cowboys got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Chip Trayanum in slot 186.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Cowboys paired the rookies with proven help, Bo Nix leading the way.
The Sturdivant steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Emery Jones
In No. 28 they get a blindside protector. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick35
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
No edge and no loss on Tyler Booker in the 35th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick58
Rnd2
Danny Stutsman
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Danny Stutsman. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick62
Rnd2
Nic Anderson
A clean, defensible pick in slot 62 with a little surplus value in Nic Anderson. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick67
Rnd3
Nicholas Singleton
They reached a country mile for Nicholas Singleton at the Round 3 slot, and the board is aghast. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick90
Rnd3
Shemar Turner
The board had cheaper options than Shemar Turner at pick No. 90, and it noticed. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick91
Rnd3
Riley Leonard
They took Riley Leonard at par in the 91st overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick92
Rnd3
Wyatt Milum
Wyatt Milum at Round 3, Pick 28 is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick99
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
A premium they did not need to pay, Malachi Moore a notch or two before his time. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick122
Rnd4
J. Michael Sturdivant
A tidy bit of business in pick 122, where J. Michael Sturdivant graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick154
Rnd5
Alfred Collins
They paid up for Alfred Collins at pick No. 154 when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
Pick186
Rnd6
Chip Trayanum
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Chip Trayanum. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
