Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall
D
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Chargers to a D. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Taulia Tagovailoa at slot 249 is 57 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The Wilson steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick7
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In pick 7 they get a weapon on the perimeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick37
Rnd2
Kool-Aid McKinstry
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Kool-Aid McKinstry at pick No. 37 is the proof. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick38
Rnd2
Darius Robinson
They paid sticker price for Darius Robinson in the 38th pick, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick69
Rnd3
Kiran Amegadjie
Nothing to complain about; Kiran Amegadjie went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick105
Rnd4
Roger Rosengarten
Nice patience on Roger Rosengarten, who had no business lasting to Round 4, Pick 5. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick110
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
They paid a round early for Cedric Gray in the 110th overall pick, more than the board wanted. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick116
Rnd4
Jalen McMillan
A slide stopped in slot 116, with Jalen McMillan worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick119
Rnd4
Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen at the 119th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick132
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
The board had Johnny Wilson higher than the 132nd pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick181
Rnd6
Chau Smith-Wade
Chau Smith-Wade in the Round 6 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick249
Rnd7
Taulia Tagovailoa
Taulia Tagovailoa in No. 249 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
