Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
Good, not great, for the Cowboys: B.

You can draft well and still miss the point. The Cowboys did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to wide receiver, which was the need that mattered most. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

Landing Casey that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.

Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Caleb Downs
In slot 12 they get an enforcer at safety at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
Pick20 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
Value with a capital V on Arvell Reese in the 20th pick, a genuine coup. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick118 Rnd4 Tacario Davis
They did well to land Tacario Davis in pick 118, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick150 Rnd5 Kage Casey
A quiet steal in the Round 5 slot: Kage Casey for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick177 Rnd5 Bud Clark
No drama and no debate, Bud Clark went about where he belonged in No. 177. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick186 Rnd6 DJ Harvey
By-the-book stuff, DJ Harvey at the 186th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick215 Rnd6 Brett Norfleet
A straight-up fair deal on Brett Norfleet at pick No. 215, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick221 Rnd7 Riley Mahlman
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Riley Mahlman. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick222 Rnd7 Joey Aguilar
Joey Aguilar slipping to the 222nd pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick225 Rnd7 Ethan O'Connor
Ethan O'Connor at No. 225 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
