Draft Grade — Saints

Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Saints.

Nobody else had Max Iheanachor anywhere near slot 36. The Saints did, by 129 spots, and that gap is the whole story. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.

The Concepcion steal is the beam this whole class leans on. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick2 Rnd1 Rueben Bain Jr.
In the 2nd pick they get a double-digit-sack hope. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick36 Rnd2 Max Iheanachor
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Max Iheanachor. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick67 Rnd3 Dani Dennis-Sutton
You do not let an edge rusher like Dani Dennis-Sutton reach pick No. 67 and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick128 Rnd4 KC Concepcion
KC Concepcion at the 128th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick138 Rnd4 Max Klare
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Max Klare in No. 138, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick144 Rnd5 Earl Little Jr.
A safety of that caliber at slot 144 is the definition of value, full stop. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick168 Rnd5 Bud Clark
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Bud Clark well ahead of where he belonged. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick182 Rnd6 Ricardo Hallman
Ricardo Hallman at Round 6, Pick 3 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
