Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall D-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureC-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Chiefs to a D-.

The war room fell hard for Johnny Wilson, and it showed at pick 95: 30 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Chiefs indulged a want in Newton while a need in quarterback stayed open.

The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.

Pick Analysis
Pick37 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette in slot 37 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick48 Rnd2 T.J. Tampa
They paid sticker price for T.J. Tampa in the 48th pick, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick64 Rnd2 Kiran Amegadjie
Kiran Amegadjie at Round 2, Pick 32 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick74 Rnd3 Ruke Orhorhoro
A reasonable price with a little left over, Ruke Orhorhoro in the 74th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick86 Rnd3 Austin Booker
The board had Austin Booker higher than pick No. 86, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick95 Rnd3 Johnny Wilson
A wild overpay on Johnny Wilson in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick105 Rnd4 Zak Zinter
By-the-book stuff, Zak Zinter at the 105th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick114 Rnd4 Matt Goncalves
Matt Goncalves in the Round 4 slot is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick116 Rnd4 McKinnley Jackson
A straight-up fair deal on McKinnley Jackson at Round 4, Pick 16, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick123 Rnd4 Josh Newton
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback to take Josh Newton, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick132 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
They paid up for Tommy Eichenberg at pick 132 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick159 Rnd5 AJ Barner
AJ Barner at No. 159 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick173 Rnd5 Kendall Milton
They reached a country mile for Kendall Milton at pick No. 173, and the board is aghast. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick174 Rnd5 Cornelius Johnson
They jumped the gun on Cornelius Johnson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick212 Rnd6 Ryan Flournoy
Nice patience on Ryan Flournoy, who had no business lasting to slot 212. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
