Daddygaff DRAFTING FOR THEBengals

Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall

FutureB-
The Bengals let Gadsden II fall and pounced. Final grade: B-. You build a draft on nights like this. Oronde Gadsden II had no business being available in the 195th overall pick, and the Bengals did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
If Pegues pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Tight end was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori in the 17th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick49
Rnd2
Ashton Gillotte
A reach on Ashton Gillotte in Round 2, Pick 17; the board had better options right there. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick81
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson in pick 81 is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick118
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
Fair-plus on Smael Mondon Jr., a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick154
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at the 154th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick195
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
Taking Oronde Gadsden II in No. 195 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
