Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB

FutureB
Daniels is the plan now, and the Bears grade out a B+. After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Bears committed. Jayden Daniels is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
The Mesidor pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots still on the board. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Jackson steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Jayden Daniels
In No. 3 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick5
Rnd1
Laiatu Latu
In pick No. 5 they get a premier pass rusher. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick17
Rnd1
Javon Bullard
In the Round 1 slot they get a downhill hitter at safety at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jackson Powers-Johnson
They paid a round early for Jackson Powers-Johnson in slot 67, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
Pick77
Rnd3
Maason Smith
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in the 77th overall pick leaves interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots for later.
Pick105
Rnd4
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice at pick 105 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick115
Rnd4
Seth McLaughlin
No drama and no debate, Seth McLaughlin went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 15. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick128
Rnd4
James Williams
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots to take James Williams, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick142
Rnd5
Khyree Jackson
They read the board right and Khyree Jackson was the payoff at pick 142. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick183
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
They reached into another round for Oronde Gadsden II, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick226
Rnd7
De'Corian Clark
A tidy bit of business in the 226th pick, where De'Corian Clark graded well above the range. It fills a real need, too.
Pick236
Rnd7
Akheem Mesidor
A real head-scratcher, Akheem Mesidor in slot 236 is miles ahead of his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
