Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueA- NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
Grand theft in No. 85: the Patriots steal Echoles and grade out a B.

The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Will Echoles, the No. 14 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 3 slot like a gift left on the doorstep. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.

They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.

Their trades came out a wash either way.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Colin Simmons
Colin Simmons is a better player than the 20th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick51 Rnd2 Ryan Wingo
No edge and no loss on Ryan Wingo in the 51st overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick85 Rnd3 Will Echoles
They will replay Will Echoles at Round 3, Pick 21 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick122 Rnd4 Lance Heard
Lance Heard in pick 122 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
Pick165 Rnd5 Robert Fitzgerald
They barely believed it either: Robert Fitzgerald still on the board at No. 165. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick182 Rnd6 J'Koby Williams
Taking J'Koby Williams in slot 182 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick191 Rnd6 Whit Weeks
A linebacker of that caliber at pick No. 191 is the definition of value, full stop. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick220 Rnd7 Andrew Rappleyea
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Andrew Rappleyea at the Round 7 slot is the proof. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick249 Rnd7 C.J. Fite
Steal is underselling it; C.J. Fite at the Round 7 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick257 Rnd7 Addison Nichols
Addison Nichols in the 257th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
