FutureA
The 49ers kept it disciplined and banked a B+. The 49ers spent real capital to be 42 picks early on Drew Kendall, and the board is going to hold them to it.
The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They banked enough surplus on Loveland to cover a lot of smaller sins. Adding Dalton Risner by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Jalon Walker
In the Round 1 slot they get the heartbeat of the defense at fair value.
Pick43
Rnd2
Colston Loveland
They barely believed it either: Colston Loveland still on the board at No. 43. It fills a real need, too.
Pick75
Rnd3
Chris Paul Jr.
Chris Paul Jr. at Round 3, Pick 11 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick97
Rnd3
Kevin Winston Jr.
By-the-book stuff, Kevin Winston Jr. at slot 97 squarely in line with his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick100
Rnd3
Charles Grant
They let Charles Grant come to them and pounced at the 100th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
Jordan Phillips at pick No. 113 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick138
Rnd4
Aeneas Peebles
A straight-up fair deal on Aeneas Peebles at Round 4, Pick 36, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick147
Rnd5
Brashard Smith
Nice patience on Brashard Smith, who had no business lasting to the 147th overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick160
Rnd5
Luke Kandra
The board had Luke Kandra higher than pick No. 160, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick227
Rnd7
Alijah Huzzie
Alijah Huzzie is a better player than No. 227 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick249
Rnd7
John Williams
John Williams at the Round 7 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick252
Rnd7
Drew Kendall
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Drew Kendall. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
