Draft Grade — 49ers

TradesB-
FutureB-
The 49ers let McGlothern fall and pounced. Final grade: B. Call it larceny. Dwight McGlothern sat on the board until Round 6, Pick 36, and the 49ers did not need to be asked twice. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
The Tracy Jr. reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Spending an early pick on OLB-EDGE with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick49
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
Fair-plus on T'Vondre Sweat, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick63
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick80
Rnd3
DJ James
A cornerback of that caliber at pick 80 is the definition of value, full stop. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick94
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
A reach on Zak Zinter in No. 94; the board had better options right there. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick124
Rnd4
Javon Solomon
A curious use of pick No. 124. Quarterback, edge rusher and other spots needed the pick; an OLB-EDGE in Javon Solomon did not.
Pick131
Rnd4
Mekhi Wingo
Mekhi Wingo in slot 131 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick133
Rnd4
Tyrone Tracy Jr.
Tyrone Tracy Jr. at the 133rd pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick176
Rnd6
Dallin Holker
Taking Dallin Holker in the 176th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick211
Rnd6
Dwight McGlothern
Dwight McGlothern at Round 6, Pick 36 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick215
Rnd6
Drake Nugent
Drake Nugent at pick 215 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick251
Rnd7
Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. in slot 251 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
