Orca76 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The 49ers kept it disciplined and banked a B-. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Matt Lee at the 211th pick, a reach of 64 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Oladapo. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
Kool-Aid McKinstry in No. 31 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick63
Rnd2
Jermaine Burton
A quiet steal in the 63rd pick: Jermaine Burton for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick94
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
A straight-up fair deal on Christian Mahogany at Round 3, Pick 31, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick124
Rnd4
Christian Jones
They paid up for Christian Jones at pick 124 when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick131
Rnd4
Mason McCormick
Mason McCormick at pick No. 131 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick133
Rnd4
Tahj Washington
Tahj Washington in the 133rd overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick176
Rnd6
Kitan Oladapo
Kitan Oladapo in pick No. 176 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick211
Rnd6
Matt Lee
They left a pile of value on the table to take Matt Lee this early at Round 6, Pick 36. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick215
Rnd6
Nathaniel Watson
Nathaniel Watson at the 215th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick251
Rnd7
Jordan Whittington
They did well to land Jordan Whittington in slot 251, just ahead of his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
