FutureB-
More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B to prove it. Priorities are a choice, and the 49ers made a strange one, taking DJ James at cornerback in No. 98 with interior defensive lineman and quarterback crying out for the pick instead.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same. Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
A tidy bit of business in slot 31, where Chop Robinson graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick67
Rnd3
Max Melton
Max Melton at pick 67 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick94
Rnd3
Dominick Puni
Good price on Dominick Puni in slot 94, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick98
Rnd3
DJ James
A curious use of pick No. 98. Interior defensive lineman and quarterback needed the pick; a cornerback in DJ James did not.
Pick125
Rnd4
James Williams
James Williams at the 125th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick132
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson in No. 132 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick176
Rnd6
Luke McCaffrey
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Luke McCaffrey at the Round 6 slot is the proof. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick209
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
Nice patience on Jared Wiley, who had no business lasting to the 209th overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick214
Rnd6
Daijun Edwards
Daijun Edwards slipping to Round 6, Pick 39 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick215
Rnd6
Nathaniel Watson
Nathaniel Watson at the Round 6 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick249
Rnd7
LaDarius Henderson
A tidy little value on LaDarius Henderson in No. 249, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
