Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the 49ers for Melton: B.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The 49ers watched Max Melton slide 29 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.

A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The Simpson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback and edge rusher. Every board in the league had Gore Jr. lower, and that gap is the story.

Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Graham Barton
In slot 31 they get a long-term starter on the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick69 Rnd3 Devontez Walker
They paid sticker price for Devontez Walker in No. 69, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick94 Rnd3 Cade Stover
Cade Stover in pick 94 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
Pick105 Rnd4 Max Melton
They robbed the room for Max Melton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick124 Rnd4 Tyler Davis
They did well to land Tyler Davis in the Round 4 slot, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick131 Rnd4 James Williams
Fair-plus on James Williams, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick133 Rnd4 Jaylin Simpson
A want over a need in pick No. 133: Jaylin Simpson adds a cornerback while quarterback and edge rusher keeps waiting.
Pick176 Rnd6 Walter Rouse
A quiet steal in the 176th overall pick: Walter Rouse for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick211 Rnd6 Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. in Round 6, Pick 36 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick215 Rnd6 Garret Greenfield
No drama and no debate, Garret Greenfield went about where he belonged in slot 215. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick251 Rnd7 Jordan Magee
Jordan Magee at No. 251 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
